How can one navigate at the open ocean without a GPS?
Some birds, fish and bacteria sense the magnetic field from the earth. The north-southpole gives one coordinate and another coordinate comes from the inclination of the magnetic field, i.e. the angle of the magnetic field. The 3D compas can in an analogous way show 2 of the needed coordinates: North/south and the latitude but not the longitude. |
