Used to increase compression and slide strength of tools, to improve their corrosion resistance, and to minimise the risk of tearing (mostly for plastics injection moulding tools.) It gives rough surfaces covered by a thick brittle white coating. Nitrogen is inserted by gas diffusion into the surface at relatively low temperatures (500-600 C), with times ranging between 5 and 60 hours. The treated surface is very hard, and requires no further hardening. Suitable for medium-high/high price steels. |
